Sami and the Robot Who Learned to Laugh

A Box of Spare Parts

Sami loved building strange things from old bits and pieces. One rainy afternoon, he gathered tiny wheels, two blue lights, and a round metal box. He joined them carefully and pressed a button. “Hello,” said a little voice. “I am Nono. I know three thousand facts.” Sami clapped with delight. “What is my next task? 🔊Robot tones ” asked the robot. “I want you to laugh with me,” said Sami. Nono’s eyes flashed, and he made a noise like a car horn. “Ha, ha, ha. Laughter complete.” Sami laughed in surprise, but Nono did not understand why.

The Joke Lesson

Sami decided to teach Nono a joke. “Why did the banana carry an umbrella?” he asked. Then he answered, “Because it was raining juice!” Sami chuckled. Nono replied, “Bananas cannot carry umbrellas. Incorrect information.” Sami made a silly face, but the robot copied it perfectly without smiling. Sami was beginning to feel discouraged when he spotted his kitten watching from the window. “Maybe we should go outside,” he said, “instead of sitting at this workbench all afternoon.”

The Cat’s Hat

In the garden, a little cat jumped into an empty basket. The basket lid slipped onto her head like an enormous hat. She strutted two steps and sat down in surprise. Sami laughed, then gently lifted the lid off her head. “Why did you laugh?” asked Nono. “The cat did not intend to wear a hat.” “Because it was surprising and silly,” said Sami. “But we help her first, so she doesn’t get frightened.” Nono stored this thought and watched the cat give a happy meow.

The Block Tower

Near the swings, a child was building a tower of colorful blocks. A gust of wind knocked it down. Blocks rolled everywhere. “I worked so hard on that,” the child sighed. Nono stretched out his arms to rebuild it, but Sami whispered, “Ask whether help is wanted first. 🔊Robot tones ” Nono asked politely, and the child smiled. Together they made a taller tower. Nono accidentally balanced one block on his own head. They all giggled, and for the first time Nono’s blue eyes twinkled in a new way.

Rainy Giggles

Soft rain began again, so the friends sheltered beneath a wide tree. A drop fell from a leaf right onto Nono’s metal nose. “Beep!” he squeaked, jumping backward. Sami and the child laughed. “Are you all right?” Sami asked. “Yes,” said Nono. “The raindrop surprised me. 🔊Rainfall ” He tried to copy their laughter, but his voice came out in a funny hiccup. The sound surprised him so much that he almost laughed again. “I like being with you,” he said. “That feeling,” Sami answered, “is part of the fun.”

The Secret of a Laugh

Back in the workshop, Sami sat beside Nono. “Is laughter only a sound?” asked the robot. Sami shook his head. “Sometimes we laugh when something surprising happens. Sometimes we laugh because we are happy with people we love. But we should not laugh at someone who is hurting.” Nono grew quiet. He remembered the kitten, the child, and the tower of blocks. “So I learn feelings by sharing moments,” he said, “not just by memorizing noises.” “Exactly, my friend,” said Sami with a smile.

A Real Laugh

The next morning Sami entered the workshop carrying a box of cookies. Nono tried to help, but balanced a cookie on his own head instead of putting it on a plate. He looked at the cookie, then at Sami. A small, warm sound bubbled out. “Hee... hee... ha!” Sami burst into laughter. 🔊Robot tones Nono laughed with him, without anyone pressing a button. “I don’t know everything,” said Nono, “but I know I am happy you’re here.” Sami shared a cookie with his friend and saved a little treat for the cat.
